Redpath Raiseboring completed another record-breaking raisebore hole last May at the Macassa mine, in Kirkland Lake, Ont. The mine belongs to Kirkland Lake Gold.
At 1,010 metres, this is the longest such hole ever accomplished in the Americas. This hole is one of the planned twin 3.7-metre diameter ventilation raises that will reach from surface down to the 5617 level.
Redpath had two machines drilling at the same time – a Redbore 70 underground and a Redbore 90EX on surface. The underground machine bored 660 metres, and the surface machine bored 1,010 metres. The machines were designed and manufactured by Redpath in North Bay, Ont.
The previous record was Redpath’s 875-metre by 6.3-metre diameter raisebore hole completed at the Niobec mine in Quebec in February last year. This hole was the work of a Redbore 90EX raisedrill, and it earned its record by being the largest ever completed in the Americas and Northern Hemisphere and third largest in the world.
